kilcunda beach things to do

1. Kilcunda Beach

One of the best things to do in Kilcunda is to explore the Kilcunda Beach rock pools at low tide.

The beach is accessible via a stair case, located either near the Foreshore Playground or the main car park a bit further down.

You’ll notice the exposed rock area is a decent size when the water is far enough out, and it’s a great chance to discover the many little underwater worlds within the rock pools.

It’s also a great place to sit on the sand and watch the waves roll in. This place can be rough and rugged with huge waves pushing fast into shore and it’s rare i see it so tame as it was the last time I visited. I have to say it looks incredibly stunning during all conditions.

During calm days when the tide is out it is relatively safe and shallow but this area is not patrolled so extra care should always be considered.

Why visit: A wide expansive beach perfect for exploring

Location: opposite the Kilcunda General Store

2. George Bass Coastal Walk

An absolute highlight for any visitor to the area, the George Bass Coastal Walk is a must.

This 7 km one way walk from Kilcunda to the Punchbowl near San Remo is filled with breathtaking ocean scenery from high along the cliff top. The trail takes up to 2 hours or 4 hours for the return trip (14 km) allowing time for capturing the incredible views along the way. You may also choose to do a smaller portion of the trail.

Expect a series of terrains as well as some moderately challenging hills. You also have the chance to access the beach and spend time exploring the rock pools.

Take plenty of water during warmer days as there is virtually no shade. This walk is also great for dogs but be sure to keep them on leash as you may occasionally come across a snake.

Why visit: breathtaking coastal walk on a well maintained track

Location: Start the track from opposite the Kilcunda general store turning right toward Melbourne side.

3. Bass Coast Rail Trail

The Bass Coast Rail Trail is another great thing to do in Kilcunda.

The trail extends from the former Wonthaggi station passing through Kilcunda and ending at the former Anderson station. It is considered relatively easy due to it being flat which is great for families or for those on two wheels.

If you are walking, I highly recommend heading toward Wonthaggi where you pass over the trestle bridge and get a good view of the Kilcunda surf beach. There is seating along the way and you can go as far as you like before turning back to Kilcunda.

Why visit: the perfect trail for bike riders and walkers with views along the way

Location: follow the path opposite the general store

4. Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge

The Bourne Creek Trestle Bridge is one of most photographed attractions in Kilcunda. If you are driving into town from the Wonthaggi side you’ll get a good look it from the road. Built well over 100 years ago, the bridge was once part of the railway line that passed through the region.

You can access it via ground level (for the best picture) at the nearby car park which will also take you out onto the beach. Alternately, park at the upper level car park located further along and walk the short distance back to the bridge. For me, it’s the best view in Kilcunda, taking in Bourne Creek to one side and the wide expansive surf beach to the other.

Why visit: a great photo opportunity and easy to get to

Location: 750 metres from the general store via Bass HWY or Rail trail

5. Shelley Beach

Looking for a secluded and picturesque beach?

Shelley Beach is a great spot to take the kids and is only a short walk from the car park. At low tide the rocks are fully exposed and it’s a great chance to go fossicking for shells. You can swim here, but as there are many surrounding rocks, it needs to be in the right conditions.

It should be noted that there are no public toilets here.

Why visit: a small secluded beach close to Kilcunda

Location: on the west side of Kilcunda – 1 km from Kilcunda Store

6. Mouth of Powlett River

For more things to do in Kilcunda, be sure to take the short drive out of town to the Powlett River.

This amazing location is where fisherman regularly come to catch salmon, bream and mullet. The tranquil location is also a wonderful spot for SUPS and kayaks.

Walk along the sand toward the surf which is only a couple of hundred metres away. During low tide young kids happily play in the small pools left by the outgoing tide, with others take on the sand dunes on the other side of the river.

The surf is a great spot for sitting back and watching the waves thunder toward the shoreline. Time it just right at high tide and you’ll get an awesome view of the water rushing into the river system.

Bring your dog for a great day out also, but be sure to keep them on a leash.

Why visit: an beautiful spot of river meets Bass Straight. A popular fishing spot.

Location: Mouth of Powlett Rd, Dalyston

7. Kilcunda General Store & Udder and Hoe

The Kilcunda General Store is a fan favourite in the area for many reasons.

The venue itself is extremely inviting with a range of seating options. Inside, the interior offers a welcoming atmosphere of rustic flair, while outside in the back garden you can find a chilled space to enjoy a coffee, cake or light meal.

The store also has seating out front where you”ll catch glimpses of the ocean.

Out back you will find Udder and Hoe, a space dedicated to local producers. Make sure to stop by and take home something fresh from the region.

Why visit: great food in a prime location

Location: Bass HWY Kilcunda
