The Leongatha Wetland Walk is a gorgeous spot to visit. It is also one of the best things to do in Leongatha.
Ideally located close to the heart of Leongatha, this must see sanctuary is only a short walk from the town’s main shopping precinct. For those passing through the South Gippsland region, why not make it a short rest stop.
Leongatha Wetland Walk for the whole family
The Leongatha Wetlands in the perfect family attraction.
The entire area is extremely picturesque. It provides well formed trails around and through the middle of the lake. For visitors, these easy short trails ensure a great view across the water from many vantage points.
Surrounded by a lush amount of plant life and native trees, the wetland is very much like a well manicured park. It is quite stunning.
You’ll find a couple of park benches along the trail which is a wonderful spot to enjoy the serenity and sounds of nature.
Birdlife to look out for
This tranquil setting is ideal for bird life to flourish, and has a healthy amount of geese and ducks that appear to call the lake home.
During my visit, I observed some young children throwing bread out to the birds. They skimmed across the lake at lightening speed, letting out a chorus of quacks and loud honking sounds heard from all corners of the park.
During the breeding season, grumpy geese do rear their heads, so be sure to keep the young ones close by.
Other birdlife you might spot include the purple swamphen, cockatoos and many other native birds passing through.
The perfect place to picnic
The wetlands has a small rotunda and grassed area just beside the carpark.
It’s the perfect place to enjoy a picnic overlooking the ponds, or just a great meeting place to catch up friends over coffee.
Are dogs allowed at the Leongatha Wetland?
Yes, you can certainly bring your loving pooches. Just be sure to keep them on lead the entire time. With this much bird life, it’s important to do the right thing for all wildlife and visitors.
Where is the Leongatha Wetland?
Access is easiest along Richie St. Continue till you hit Johnson which will take you all the way to the car parking area.
Access from the Great Southern Rail Trail
For those coming from the rail trail, the wetlands is only a small detour at around 10 minutes walk, or just a couple of minutes bike ride.
You’ll leave the trail just after the bridge underpass (after the old station) on the Koonwarra side. Head down Young Street and follow the above directions from there.
