Suitable for: Young families, swimming, SUP
Closest facilities : beach side near Cuttriss Street
This safe and shallow beach is located near the entrance of Screw Creek and is adjacent to the Inverloch Foreshore camping ground.
The calm and protected waters of Andersons Inlet are a big drawcard for families with young children. There is often little to no wave action here, and if escaping the summer madness is high on your agenda, be sure to check out this quieter spot.
During low tide you’ll notice just how far the water can recede, with tiny mud crabs scattering in their thousands. It’s the perfect spot for kids to run, play and explore.
You will also find one of the best walks in South Gipssland to do while here. The Townsend Bluff Estuary Walk is a short and scenic trail that overlooks the town. The return walk is only 35 to 40 minutes to complete at a gentle pace.
2. Dog Friendly Beach Inverloch
Section: Andersons Inlet
Suitable for: Young families. swimming, sail boat, water skiing, boating, SUP
Closest Facilities: beachside near Cuttriss Street OR at the Inverloch Boat Ramp
Not just for dogs, this is one of the best Inverloch beaches for families.
Off lead all year round
While Inverloch has a range of dog friendly beaches, there is only one “off lead” beach accessible all year round. It is located between Grand View Grove and Cutriss Street. This stretch of sand is approx 450 metres in length, a vey generous amount of space to play.
The beach itself is relatively wide, while the water provides perfect conditions for playing a game of fetch.
Alternative beach – Limited off lead times
You can also access another year round dog friendly beach though during the height of summer they must be on lead. It is located from the start of Venus Street to Wave Street along Ramsey Boulevard.
Dogs on lead – all of December and January 10 am to 6 pm / During Easter. Out of these times is off lead. (6pm to 10 am)
Dogs off lead – February 1st to November 30th all hours.
3. Inverloch’s Town beach (the Glade)
Section: Andersons Inlet
Suitable for: young families, swimming, sail boats, fishing, Jet Ski, SUP
Closest facilities: either at the Inverloch Boat Ramp or at the Environmental Centre (opposite the Esplanade Hotel)
The beach that fronts Inverloch Glade and Rainbow Park is in absolute prime position. It is without doubt one of Inverloch’s most popular family friendly beaches, and extends from Toorak Road all the way to the Inverloch Boat Ramp.
With generally calm waters, the beach provides a relaxed and safe sandy space for all. You’ll find holiday makers enjoying the tranquil waters while young kids play happily in the sand. Bring a picnic and spend the day lounging and relaxing on this gorgeous beach. Finish the day with fish and chips in the park.
The South Gippsland Yacht Club also resides here with sail boats making the most of perfect conditions.
Access is easy via car parks along the road, or take a short walk through the park area.
4. Inverloch Sand Dunes
Section: Inverloch Coastal Reserve
Suitable for: fishing. jet ski, boating
Closest Facilities: along Ramsey Blvd at Rotary Centenary Park ( from the beach – behind the sand dunes, look for the “teepees”)
Ready for more great beaches in Inverloch to visit?
The Inverloch Sand Dunes can be found where the entrance to Andersons Inlet begins. Swimming is not ideal due to tidal currants moving in and out of the inlet.
Boating, fishing and jet skiing are just some of the activities occurring here. It is also a place for long walks on the wide expansive shoreline, and a place dogs are welcome on and off leash (dependent of time of day).
The sand dunes that encompass this area are filled with natural vegetation including the interesting ‘teepees” of washed up tree branches.
My favourite time of day here is late in the afternoon when you get to witness a golden sunset out on the horizon.
5. Inverloch Surf Beach
Section: Inverloch Coastal Reserve
Suitable for: families, surfing, swimming, fishing
Closest facilities: Surf beach car park / Surf Club
The Inverloch Surf Beach is a summer hot spot, attracting big crowds in their droves.
Grab your beach umbrella (no shade) and boogie boards, and hit those golden sands. The surf is generally ideal, and at low tide you can walk out quite a distance before it gets too deep.
This is also a patrolled beach with the local surf life saving club in attendance during the summer months and during Easter break.
The small local kiosk is always run off its feet with ice-creams and cold drinks selling like hot cakes.
Parking is always a challenge, but the surrounding streets provide a place to leave the car.
You’ll find outdoor showers and toilets here at the surf club.
6. Flat Rocks – Dinosaurs & Caves
Section: Bunurong Coastal Reserve & Marine Park
Suitable for: experienced snorkeling, fishing, diving
Closest facilities: none on site – go to surf beach or back to town
The area known as Flat Rocks is an intriguing spot.
This fascinating spot is the perfect place for endless hours of exploration, particularly when it comes to the prehistoric kind.
The Dinosaur Dreaming Site is where the discovery of fossilised dinosaur bones were discovered back in 1990’s (not that long ago right!). Best visited at low tide when the rocks are well and truly exposed, you can find the small carpark just past the turn off for the RACV Resort.
Further along the beach is the often hidden caves. You’ll need to walk around the rocks to access this interesting spot. Again, low tide is when you’ll be able to see it.
7. Eagles Nest
Section: Bunurong Coastal Reserve & Marine Park
Suitable for: experienced surfers, diving
Closest facilities: none on site – go to surf beach or back to town
Just past Flat Rocks the coastline begin to rise up into dramatic cliffs. Access along the beach is not possible from here so a car is needed to get around.
Your first road side scenic lookout will be that of Eagles Nest, a local favourite. The name comes about from the interesting rock formation seen here, a consequence of timely erosion.
The stair case leading down to the beach requires some effort (more so coming back up) but is well and truly worth it. You’ll discover a quiet bay of beautiful white sand and mesmerizing deep blue water. Swimming is not recommended due to the unpredictable currents.
Explore around the rocks and discover fascinating shells and small marine life hiding within the many little rock pools.
At the top of the Eagles Nest is the short walk to to gorgeous lookout. This breathtaking spot is also a great sunrise or sunset viewpoint.
8. Shack bay
Section: Bunurong Coastal Reserve & Marine Park
Suitable for: experienced surfers, swimming (with caution), snorkeling
Closest facilities: none on site – go to surf beach or back to town
This picturesque bay along the Bunurong Coastal Reserve is a true hidden gem. It is found just over 1 km past Eagles Nest turn off and is one of the best scenic Inverloch beaches.
The small bay is surrounded by lush green bushland and towering cliffs making it an ideal escape from the summer crowds. While swimming is a wonderful pastime here, the seas here are unpredictable and caution should be taken at all times.
Shack Bay is the ideal “lazy day” getaway so bring a picnic and a good book to unwind with.
There are no amenities here but that’s what you get when you are looking for a little piece of secluded paradise.
