Things to do in walkerville,victoria

Walkerville is divided into a north and south side, connected only during low tide.

1. Lime Kilns

A unique attraction, the Lime Kilns are an historic landmark found directly on the beach in Walkerville South. During low tide you can walk to the kilns from the north side car park, or drive directly to the south side car park and access them from there.

The kilns were built in 1875, and were in operation until 1926. Lime from the surrounding cliffs was brought in, reduced to powder, and then shipped out for use in various ways by the building industry.

The kilns are well preserved and are worth taking a closer look when in Walkerville.

2. Cape Liptrap Lighthouse

Th current lighthouse was built in the year 1951, and stands as a lonely figure facing the often wild waters of Bass Straight. Access can be gained by driving the 8 km gravel road off Walkerville South Road. The location is very much isolated and intensely pristine, but visitors will find a tourist friendly accessible path and picnic tables here.

The lookouts along the path and around the lighthouse boost incredible coastal views with the swells of the ocean crashing into the rocky shoreline. If you are lucky enough, you might set your eyes on the migrating Humpback whales between May and November.

During my visit on a windy March day, I spotted a herd of seals riding the swell off shore. To my eye, there must have been at least 20 to 30, and I spent a thrilling 30 minutes watching them play from the cliffs above.

3. Walkerville North Beach

The North Beach is a place of exploration and clearly a popular fishing spot. Visitors coming into Walkerville will slowly descend the slopes catching glimpses of the coast along the way.

The shoreline here is dominated by flat rocks, opening up hundreds of rock pools and the prospect of finding something interesting. Visitors can spend hours here wandering the beach and enjoying the peaceful surrounds.

4. Walkerville South Beach

Walkerville South beach is the best place to bring the kids for a swim. It’s shallow, safe and sandy, and directly in front of the car park area. To your left is the lime kilns, and to your right is Bird Rock, with some interesting rock formations you must go and see.

This particular area is quite secluded, and provides sheltered and shady spots to enjoy the day. The many large rock formations are an interesting maze along the beach and the perfect spot to get lost in.

5. Lime Burners Walk

The Lime burners walk connects the south and north sides of Walkerville via a 20 minute moderate hike.

You’ll pass the lime kilns from above before heading up a somewhat steep trail, but you’ll be rewarded with impressive coastal views along the way. The trail is gravel but can get a bit muddy during periods of rain.
