about
Settled over a hundred years ago, Wonthaggi is well known as a former coal mining town. It’s history is cemented through the State Coal Mine site. Take a walk along the heritage trail where historic buildings, displays and underground tours (suspended till further notice) bring its former glory days back to life. Entry to the site is free.
The town has quite a bit of green space to enjoy through scenic wetlands and parks. I highly recommend visiting the Wonthaggi Wetlands Reserve, just a short walk from the CBD for a tranquil setting with plenty of bird life.
